Geoffrey Oliver

Partner

Geoffrey articled in Vancouver, BC with a mid-size firm and sojourned at Ernst and Young before joining Lester Landau in Iqaluit, Nunavut. He works with a diverse client base ranging from local start-up businesses and not-for-profit organizations, to successful operating companies, and regional Inuit organizations. He has travelled extensively throughout the Qikiqtani, Kivalliq and Kitikmeot regions to service clients at their place of business. In addition to assurance services, Geoffrey is active with clients in Nunavut providing strategic planning advice, business start-up assistance, and tax planning.

Volunteer Activities

Geoffrey is active in the community as President Elect for the Rotary Club of Iqaluit.  He is past president of the Nunavut Badminton Association and past chair of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.  In his spare time you can find him cross-country skiing, fishing the Sylvia Grinnell, or on the squash court.

Debbie Lyng

Partner

Debbie started in public practice in the early 1980’s during her Co-Op work terms at the University of Waterloo.  Working for small and medium sized firms in Southern and Northern Ontario.  After completing university she worked for Deloitte & Touche in Oshawa, Ontario where she completed her articling and received her CA designation.  For a period after the birth of her son she became a sole practitioner dealing with clients in many businesses, corporate and personal tax.  The diversity of work performed throughout these years has been instrumental in developing Debbie’s broad knowledge of bookkeeping, accounting, assurance, corporate and personal tax which she can call upon to deal with multiple situations.  For 11 years Debbie worked in Cobourg, Ontario for Langhorne, Irwin, Wharm-Spry, LLP continuing to develop her managerial and advisory skills. In 2008, while looking for an exciting change, Debbie worked on a contract basis for Lester Landau (formerly MacKay Landau).  Her love of the North prompted her to move to Iqaluit, Nunavut in 2011.  In 2012 she became one of the partners in the firm.

Volunteer Activities

Debbie has been a member of Scouts Canada since 1998 working in many volunteer roles.  Currently she is the Group Commissioner for 1st Iqaluit Scout Group.  As well she is a member of the Royal Purple holding the position of Treasurer. Community involvement especially with the youth is very important to Debbie.

Shawn Lester

Managing Partner

Shawn started his career in public practice in 1989 with Vodden, Bender and Seebach, a small regional firm in Southwestern Ontario.  In 1995, after starting a family, Shawn moved to Fredericton, New Brunswick to work for Grant Thornton. A year later he returned to Southwestern Ontario to work in a local firm. During these career building years, Shawn spent time developing his assurance, accounting and advisory skills working with municipal, not-for-profit, agricultural and agri-related organizations, as well as privately held businesses.  At the same time Shawn developed a strong background in personal, corporate and trust taxation. In 2000, Shawn and his family moved to Iqaluit, Nunavut where he became a partner in Lester Landau (formerly MacKay Landau) and then took over as managing partner in 2005.

Volunteer Activities

Shawn has always believed in giving back to the community.  Through the years he has been involved in his local church and as a volunteer board member of organizations. Shawn continued this service when moving to Iqaluit by becoming part of a local church where he has been involved as a council member, teacher and treasurer.  As well, Shawn has been part of the Iqaluit Chamber of Commerce as treasurer from 2001 to 2012 and president from 2012 to 2015. In 2012, the Iqaluit Rotary Club presented Shawn with the Paul Harris Fellowship award for his contribution to the community.  In 2016, He received the Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
